I used to not appreciate my mom’s homecooked food – perhaps having eaten it since young so I started taking it for granted. Think many of us went through that phrase in life.
Then after that, it was easier to just eat outside food due to work and other commitments. Plus we don’t have a practice of having dinner at home as she doesn’t take dinner = no cooking! She only cooks lunch daily too.
Hence, the only time I actually could have her homecooked meal was during special occasions such as Chinese New Year!
It’s stark and brutal but the honest truth is that eventually she will not be around one day and I will never be able to enjoy her homecooked food ever again. This gives me a newfound appreciation for homecooked food from then on.
Yep, so now I am enjoying her homecooked lunch at least once a week over the weekends (or at least 1-2 times a month!)! 😊
Taken at 9.30am in the morning, all the food were being prepped ready for cooking.

And the soup has been boiling for hours – a good robust flavorful Cantonese soup with plenty of ingredients!

An early lunch with mom with everything that she has been cooking/prepping for hours as mentioned above.
As I snapped a photo, my mom was like “Why you take this photo? Not even plated nicely aiyoo!” Lol, my mom is so embarrassed but she shouldn’t be.
I don’t just see the food. I see the effort, time, thought and love behind each and every time she cooks and in all the dishes. It’s her way of showing her love for me through her cooking instead of reaffirming the words verbally.
And for that – I will always be thankful for my mom’s home cooked food! On a practical side, this also saves me lunch money on weekends when I eat at home rather than eating out daily which I do for literally all my meals 😊
