It seems to be ingrained inside us since a young age – the problem where we compare ourselves to others. I know I’ve always suffered from this issue because of my childhood and this habit grew up with me. Perhaps its part and parcel of being part of society as well?
I had everything once but I didn’t see it; nor appreciate it because I kept comparing what I had to someone or something better. I envied people who had better looks, better future, better skills, better life and more. Secretly, I wanted to be like them and coveted what they have.
Regardless, comparing is a big downfall because your self esteem gets lowered, you get insecure, resentful, plagued with self doubts and you will NEVER be happy or satisfied with your life or the people around you as you feel that there is ALWAYS someone better or something better.
It goes the same for things as well. We always compare the things we have to others who seem to have it all. But do they actually have it all or is this a farce?
Who knows.
Social media isn’t the best place to look at because most people will only share the positive parts of their lives compared to the negative. I mean seriously speaking, why would you want to share all your problems with the world right? I know some do but many don’t.
Anyway, I digress as always.
The main point of this is – one of the ways to be happy and satisfied with your life is to stop comparing. Easy to say; harder to do. It just comes with practice and the right mindset to overcome it!
Here are some habits I am trying to cultivate. It may work for you as well (:
Be grateful for what you have
I look around at what I have around me and I feel so much love for what I have. If there’s more; I’m happy and won’t take it for granted. I also write daily in my gratitude journal for things that happen daily that I’m thankful for. It really helps to condition the mind to be more grateful and appreciative.
Detachment + Feel happy for others
In order to stop coveting what I don’t have or can’t have, I try to practice a sense of detachment. This is especially essential with you scroll through social media feeds. Eventually I just stopped comparing and felt happy for them instead. It’s their lives, not mine!
Accept yourself and focus on your strengths
I’m not perfect. I have flaws. But all of these make up me and I accept who I am. There are of course things I want to change; those can be worked on. Meanwhile, focus on what I’m good at and just blossom on my own!
Compare only with yourself
If you really want to compare. Why not compare with yourself? I know I want to be a better verison of myself from yesterday and everyday so why not compare who you were yesterday or last year and look at how far you’ve grown?(:
No matter what – here’s one thing I know = I’m trying my best! Always!~ 😊
