I usually opt for an occasional Uber when I’m in a rush. It so happened during one of the days when I spotted something interesting in the app about my driver – he’s deaf. I didn’t know that; did you? Guess it never crossed my mind that this could actually be a viable source of income for the deaf. This really opened my mind!
Anyway, I usually opt for the back seat for safety reasons when I am alone especially if the driver is a male .. so it was an automatic reflex on my end. Then I spotted the sign above with some tips. Oh dear..wrong move. I should have sat up front with him so it would be easier for us to communicate better if needed. Well, lesson learnt for future reference!
I also learnt other tips and simple sign language from the sign. Really interesting to learn and I tried my best to thank him in the sign language I learnt after he dropped me off(: It’s good to at least make an effort to “speak” to them back in the same language no matter what! 😊
Most importantly, it really warms my heart to know that Uber is taking the effort to forge a path towards an inclusive society in Singapore. We all deserve to be accepted as who we are!(:
