Was watching a video on Facebook reminding people to pay a little more attention to their surroundings instead of being glued to their phones and other distractions; and I felt the message resonate within me really deeply. Technology really enpowers us but yet, limits our human abilities at the same time.
Perhaps yes, sometimes work/social media/chatting with friends supersedes everything but why not put down the phone, remove the earpieces and other distractions once in awhile and start paying attention to your surroundings occasionally? It could be simple and short i.e – walking a 5 minute walk from office to the train station without using your phone!
I did that recently and here’s what I observed:
There was an auntie standing in front of SOTA (School of the Arts) holding up this paper bag with a simple sign that said “Please Help Me. My daughter must go for her operation (stomach cancer). She is a single mother (4 children). Thank you for your help”.
She neither begged or openly approached anybody and most people just bypassed her without a second glance or chose to ignore. It was a sad sight to see.
Having said that, I couldn’t walk past her without giving her a small donation myself.
I was in a rush as I was meeting my friend for dinner; but I felt I could do a little more and requested to snap a photo of her card and get her contact details – just in case.
Posted a quick appeal on Facebook to help her out. Nope, it didn’t go viral if you were wondering but hopefully, it did help a little in driving some donations and that’s just my wish (:
Perhaps its silly of me because it could well be a con but I hold the belief that if it might be true – so every little bit would help. This brought me joy to know that I might have helped! 😊
Anyway, the main point of the story is – I wouldn’t have noticed her if I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. And just sharing it as a reminder to myself to cultivate this habit more often. Perhaps you might be motivated to do the same too! 😊
Lastly, Happy Deepavali to all my readers who celebrate this festival!(:
