Review | Laugh Die You: The Karaoke

This is the first time the popular Malaysian comedy, Laugh Die You has been performed in Singapore and it opened to a strong crowd on their opening night of 9th July where the bf and I were in attendance thanks to complimentary tickets from Popcorn Studios Malaysia!

Laugh Die You: The Karaoke

Do note that the show only ran for 2 nights, 9th and 10th July at Resorts World Sentosa. That’s unfortunate as it was a really good show filled with excellent stand up comedy!

The show was about 3 hours long including a 15 minutes intermission. It didn’t feel that long especially when you can eat in the theatre (yay for popcorn!)!

And let’s get on with the show review!

Hydra & School Choir

Malaysian band, Hydra as well as a performing choir all the way from Kuala Lumpur started off the show showcasing their musical talents with a medley of popular music hits – karaoke style (the lyrics appeared onscreen!

Gurmit Singh

The show really picked up when Gurmit took to the stage and unveiled to Singapore for the first time, his newest alter ego character – Hero Singh, an Indian security guard complete with a loud red turban, hairy chest, Indian accent and headshaking. Did I mention that he can really sing? Yes, the transition from comedian to comedian begins with a popular hit song, dancers (and sometimes the choir) before they take to stage with their ribald jokes.

Gurmit also hosted 2 audience interaction game sessions within the entire show and the audience were really sporting! Hats off to them, and the prizes were pretty good (some were funny, R21 sex toys!) – they even gave a TV set away to 1 lucky winner, wow!

Having said that, Gurmit is a funny man and I think he was one of my favourite stand up comedians. His jokes are quite tasteful and he’s a really friendly/funny guy so you wouldn’t take offense much. He’s just the starter because the other acts were the main course.

Fakkah Fuzz

Local Singaporean Malay comedian was next to take to the stage. You might find him familiar as he did appear in the news recently with regards to his joke regarding something about Malaysia.. you can Google it if you’re interested. He started off by poking fun at his recent scandal before following up with a series of jokes. The majority of his act are made up of racist jokes poking fun at the typical racial stereotypes especially his own race – he was good and funny!

Joanne Kum

Flamboyant and loud, the Malaysian female comedian was brash and her jokes totally uncensored, as in the super R21 way. Not afraid to poke fun of herself, she was pretty funny – I was happy to see a woman in their line up of acts as female comedians are pretty rare!

Kumar

Who doesn’t know Kumar? This no nonsense is the Queen of “Bitch” and not afraid to show his sass and show off his drag queen status. Every line that came out of his mouth literally almost cracked us up though some jokes are recycled (if you’ve seen his videos online) but still funny all the same. No race nor gender is safe from Kumar, and no one should take offense at everything that comes out of his mouth, though prudish and conservative people will be super scandalised by the number of ribald and racist jokes.

Overall Comments

At the end of the show, my face was painful from laughing and smiling so much! Everyone of them cracked me up and I think that it was a fantastic show!

Kudos to everyone in the show for their great performance that night and the producers for putting together such an amazing and hilarious stand up comedy show! It’s just a great pity that the show only ran for the 2 nights on 9th and 10th July but hopefully they would be back again soon!!(:

Note: A pair of complimentary tickets and backstage passes were given in exchange for this review from Popcorn Studios Malaysia!
