Nutella fans – BRACE YOURSELVES!
There could be a shortage of Nutella very soon; or at the very least, a price hike!
Nutella shortage possible after hazelnut crop wiped out
A Nutella shortage may be on the horizon thanks to a March frost in Turkey that wiped out about 70 percent of this year’s hazelnut crop.

Hazelnut prices have skyrocketed, hitting a 10-year-high and causing many to worry that prices will only continue to increase with the impending shortage. That’s bad news for Nutella lovers, as one 13-ounce jar of the coma-inducing cocoa spread is packed with 50 hazelnuts.
Ferrero, the Italian chocolatier that produces Nutella, is the largest consumer of hazelnuts. The company acquired the Turkish hazelnut supplier Oltan Group in July to “guarantee and further improve the quality of a leading raw material that gives a unique taste” to its products, Ferrero said in a press release.
It is unclear how the price of Nutella and other hazelnut-ridden products will be affected by the shortage.

Alternatives to Nutella in Singapore?
The HungryGoWhere team recently had a taste test of a few other hazelnut-chocolate spreads other than Nutella and here’s the review taken from the site HERE!
We put the readily-available hazelnut-chocolate spreads of our supermarkets to the tongue test to find out which is the smoothest, sweetest, most hazelnut-y, and most worth putting towards our daily calorie intakes.
Here’s a hint – Nutella wasn’t the critic’s pick!(:

DELFI CHOCO
DELFI CHOCO | 113kcal per 20g | Our tasters were clearly sticking to a benchmark – this hazelnut spread was immediately branded as “not as nice as Nutella.” Made in Germany, it has a floury texture, sweet “but not nutty enough”, fruity, and was compared to “cheap Easter eggs.” Its chocolate flavour is mild – not enough cocoa, we reckon; it uses sweet whey powder and 5 per cent of cocoa powder. Price: 350g for $3.95

JW NUT
JW NUT | 116.3kcal per 20g | This would go best on top of a vanilla cupcake – it’s almost cloyingly sweet, though it’s smooth and disappears off the tongue like icing sugar frosting. Could be more chocolate-y. Price: 350g for $3.01

TUNAS MARVELLA
TUNAS MARVELLA | 110kcal per 20g | This made-in-Turkey hazelnut cocoa spread was our least favourite – too bad, for we had high hopes from its gourmet-like packaging. It tastes like cheap chocolate with an oily, cardboard-like aftertaste. The artificial taste garnered “yuck!”, “ugh!” and “eww!” Next! Price: 450g for $4.50

NUTTIEST HAZELNUT-CHOCOLATE SPREAD
NUTTIEST HAZELNUT-CHOCOLATE SPREAD | 365 HAZELNUT SPREAD | 113kcal per 20g | While the others were meek in their hazelnut flavour, this is “overwhelmingly nutty”. It’s creamy and smooth, and not as thick as Tunas Marvella or thin as Nutella, but is much sweeter than the others in this selection. One likened this Brussels-made spread to the filling in Hanuta. Price: 750g for $8.90

OVOMALTINE
OVOMALTINE | 108.8kcal per 20g | Yes, we know this isn’t a hazelnut-chocolate spread, but we had to throw this into the selection: the texture and the right balance of sweetness is a winner – crunchy, “Ovaltine-y and moreish – I can’t stop eating” said one of our tasters. “Is this Ferrero Rocher paste?” asked another. It also has a lot of chocolate flavour in it. This comment best sums it up: “Who needs to spread this on bread? Just eat this on its own.” We heart. Price: 400g for $10.80

CRITIC’S PICK | HIGHWAY CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT BREAD SPREAD
CRITIC’S PICK | HIGHWAY CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT BREAD SPREAD | 105.6kcal per 20g | “Yum, Nutella-like,” was the first comment, followed by many others followed who mistook this for the famous hazelnut-chocolate spread. This is a well-balanced spread, with strong hazelnut flavour. The almost-buttery spread has just the right thickness (good on “stir-ability”), and is not overly sweet. It coats the tongue but isn’t cloying, plus it’s cheaper than Nutella. We’re sold! Price: 400g for $3.50
