#WeekendsWithMitsueki: Surprise Birthday Celebration at Jewel Music Box @ HomeTeam NS Balestier x Oasis Taiwan Porridge – 10 Dec 2023

#WeekendsWithMitsueki Surprise Birthday Celebration at Jewel Music Box @ HomeTeam NS Balestier x Oasis Taiwan Porridge - 10 Dec 2023

This Sunday weekend was a great one, starting off with a late start to my day (aka being able to sleep in!) and then pulling off a successful birthday surprise thanks to the cooperation/coordination of everyone! It was a mad rush trying to get everyone there but we made it and the birthday girl was definitely surprised and happy to see all her beloved friends! There were some drop outs along the way, but just glad most of us came through!

We booked a 3 hour room at Jewel Music Box KTV located within HomeTeam NS Balestier and the prices are really affordable for a basic 3 hour singing session on a weekend priced at around $15 per pax with free flow tidbits and drinks – a great steal; albeit the place being a little ulu. Best to come via car, or the nearest MRT is Toa Payoh with a 15 mins walk / Zhongshan Mall (10 mins walk). Definitely you can’t complain about the price. With the cake and treating the birthday girl, it came up to $25/pax which isn’t too shabby for this session!

More importantly, we had fun and took the time to gather to celebrate 🙂

The celebration continued on for dinner + opening of presents at Oasis Taiwan Porridge, a relatively old school place for Taiwanese porridge that has been around for more than 40-50 years! We didn’t make reservations but fortunately was able to get a table pretty quickly. Would recommend making reservations and booking their famous braised duck and tau kwa as it was sold out when we were there!

Nonetheless we made alternative plans and went for the herbal chicken instead which was alright. What impressed us more was the chaipo omelette which paired really well with the free flow sweet potato porridge (a little too bland for me imo), for more taste. We also ordered the prawn rolls which were okay, just a tad expensive and the three eggs spinach (good!), before ending off with dessert of this glutinous sesame rice balls which was delicious.

The total cost of this meal came up to around $106 for 4 pax including drinks and the meal which is not too bad for an occasional Celebratory meal out like this (approx $27 per pax) and they even gave us return vouchers ($15) to visit their new outlet at MacPherson when they move over in February 2024. I’m sure this place will be missed by Toa Payoh and Balestier residents living in this area as the surrounding garden is really lovely; and apparently a very popular wedding Photoshoot spot back in those days!

And that’s it for our day out! Time to head back to chillax for abit before calling it a day and the Monday begins.

Thanks always for reading and I hope you had a great weekend like me too!
