Weekends with Mitsueki (SP Phase 2 (HA), Day 200 (Day 735): Buibui Birthday Celebrations & Meals x Exploring Tiong Bahru – 16 April 2022

And today’s the day I’ve been waiting for almost half a year for = to gift the mister his birthday present that I bought/have been keeping since last year HAHAHHA!

There you have it, all unveiled in its glory – a framed deconstructed iPhone 4. Pretty cool huh?

Oh yes, missed out on yesterday’s post? Read it here!

Waking up early for brekkie together has not been high on my list, but this weekend is slightly special so brekkie together it is at the famed Tiong Bahru Bakery located just across our hotel!

As it was relatively early, there wasn’t much of a queue and we were in pretty quickly to share their ham and cheese croissant paired with a flat white for him, and an iced choco for me to start off our morning right.

With plenty of time to spare, we took this chance to stroll around the Tiong Bahru neighborhood to have a look-see around starting from Tiong Bahru Market (both the wet market and food stalls), to the various cafes/quaint little shops located all around the different lanes and blocks before finally making it to the Foodie Marketplace, a lil supermarket of sorts.

And then we were here at the newly opened Mr & Mrs Nasi Lemak which has been making waves on social media for awhile now with their delicious nasi lemak (and awful long queues). As a word of advice – a) Don’t come too hungry b) Be prepared for a minimum of 20-30 minutes wait as their queuing system is rather bad. Hopefully, this will improve over the months to come as it can be quite a deterrent for many.

I think we started queuing around 1120am and only managed to get our food around 12pm+, yeah but we were prepared for that (plus we weren’t THAT hungry yet) – just in time to dig into our food later on!

The nasi lemak was done pretty nicely and served with basmati rice resulting in a very light taste on the coconut rice. You MUST have it with the sweet sambal or else it will be very plain. All their nasi lemak comes in a variety of sets and you can top up accordingly for different bites (veggies, more meat etc) and the pricing is transparent.

My suggestion is their chicken wing set rice for $5. Top up for their otah, lady’s fingers (if you like) and fried pork belly so that you can try a variety of different sides. We loved their chicken wings btw, the batter was done really nicely. Otah was fine, and I really loved the lady’s fingers. The fried pork belly was sinful, and not too bad as well. Overall, expect a lighter/sweeter tasting nasi lemak here. We would return again if we are in the vicinity, and if there isn’t a queue!

With our tummies satisfied, it’s onwards back to our hotel for a quick shower/chill before heading to Great World City for our movie date with Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore wheee!

And also because it was his birthday, I topped up for the Grand Seats (reclining) – something similar to Gold Class but without the frills (access to the Gold Class lounge/blankets/free snacks/tableside service) in their large Grand Theatre of over 200+ seats! Only the last row has these reclining seats that you need to top up for priced at $22-23 per seat. Not bad.

The movie was great too. Just watch it as a fan of the wizarding world and without bias, you will enjoy it! 🙂

His surprise browhaus appointment was next hahhahahahahaha.

And finally, it was time for dinner at P.S Cafe – one of those rare buibui days where I actually had all 3 full meals; but only for this special day! Reservations recommended especially over the weekend for a better seat 🙂

Here we had 2 mains – the truffle mushroom pizza, king prawn aglio olio, as well as a half portion of their famous truffle fries. They were all not bad, however I think I personally prefer the food from one of my fave cafes, The Tuckshop instead (including their truffle fries!).

However, what P.S Cafe has an edge over them will be their desserts – specifically the chocolate blackout cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Now this is essentially the best way to celebrate a birthday with delicious cake for chocolate lovers! I also suggest making a note in your reservation to request for a birthday candle/greeting as this can be prepped as a surprise for the recipient 🙂

Now what came more as a surprise to us was the surprise cake prepped by our hotel to the mister that night when we headed back to our room 🙂 that was a nice touch and much appreciated to end off his birthday on a lovely note.
