8D7N Okinawa Travelogue Day 3: Kokusai Dori Street x Palette Kumoji x Pokemon Store Okinawa x A&W Okinawa x Supermarket Shopping – 27 Jan 2019 (No Car/Solo Travel)

Wow, it’s Day 3 of my Okinawa trip already?! Time flies~

Woke up as usual to have my usual brekkie, update my socials and even – do a little bit of work (though my last day was on 24 la but I can still help to do some social media postings remotely till the end of the month at the very least :))

Most importantly – yay I sat down and forced myself to finish writing my blog post/travelogue for the day before. Cos if you procrastinate ah..you won’t do it. Problem after this is me finding the time to sit down to do the not so fun part of actually scheduling the post, doing the tagging and blahblahblah. All the administration portion which I dislike. Sigh.

Read the previous posts!

That aside, ootd for the day! Was determined to leave earlier verus 2pm plus the day before HAHHAHAHA 😂😂

Looked at the sun shining out and I’m like DON’T CHEAT MY FEELINGS YO.

I’m well prepared this time. Yesterday was really a different level of cold 😷

But first, take a look at my pretty nails by Myntefingers ♥️

After that, I was off to my first stop – Pork Tamago Onigiri Honten nearby Kokusai Dori Street! Decided to walk instead taking the monorail since it wasn’t that far off. Plus kill some calories at the same too 🙂

No cherry blossoms spotted sadly, but I did spot two hibiscus! Pretty 🙂

Other sights along the way.

So every Sunday, the street of Kokusai Dori is closed off to cars from 12pm – 6pm so pedestrians are free to walk in the middle of the road.

And so I did just that cos – my grandma’s road you know? HAHHAHA (joking, obviously 😅)

Loads of fun activities happening as well as the streets are closed 🙂

In general, the ENTIRE street of Kokusai Dori is just filled with ROWS AND ROWS OF shops (yes, many tourist traps) but I’m a sucker for all of these 🙂

Definitely one of the best places for you to stock up on all your Okinawan souvenirs~

Try Okinawa food (taco rice/Blue Seal ice cream) and generally have a good time shopping here!

I popped by Calbee+ to check out what’s unique here! And yep, they have a special region exclusive which is the sweet potato fries.

They were absolutely delish and that settled lunch already cos it was so filling. Guess I can always have my Pork Tamago Onigiri Honten next time~

Yeah and I think you might get a little sick of sweet potato after exploring this whole street cos I was.

All things sweet potato from every famous outlet including the Okashi Goten, Pablo and so many more!

I swear, you don’t even need to have lunch or dinner before coming to Kokusai Dori cos you will be just filled up on ALL the samples available for you to try!

Yeps and I tried pretty much EVERYTHING!

Special mention to the jimami tofu, Fukugiya baumkuchen and Kukuru Sweet Forest Okinawa pineapple sweet potato cake and of cos all the sweet potato related items from Okashi Goten!

In some places, you can even get free awamori and Okinawan alcoholic drinks tastings as well!

Then for the generous ones – even an ENTIRE tart!

Generally the whole feel of the place reminds me of Osaka, Tokyo’s quirky little cousin and one of my fave cities as well. But I think that Okinawa is fast on the rise to become one of my current fave as well 🙂

I love how quirky and lovely the place is! And the people are just absolutely WONDERFUL!

I was only halfway done exploring Kokusai Dori but I spotted a Pokemon Store sign when I reached the end of the Street and decided to go check it out at Palette Kumoji!

That pretty much led me to an Italian fair and wow the food looks amazing! Italy is definitely a place in Europe I would love to visit one day 😊😊

Headed down to the supermarket after that and score one for Daph with a free gyoza sample (oishi des!).

Lol and the ubiquitous sweet potato everything everywhere 😂😂

I also finally located the Pokemon Store Okinawa! Not that I plan to buy anything but it’s just in me to make sure that I visit all the Pokemon Stores in Japan if I do see it 🙂

The special Pikachu here will be dressed in the Hawaiian shirt and the Okinawan traditional attire!

Other than that – nothing much other than the usual cute Pikachu and Pokemon characters which you can find in every city/region!

One thing that I really enjoy about my trip to Japan or Okinawa is how there are SO many free seats all around almost everywhere. Sadly no WiFi (had problems accessing 😅😅) but I sat down to just write this travelogue! At least write first lor, photos can do later 🙂

I’m absolutely satisfied 🙂

Brrrr it was really cold at night though! At least now I’m a little more prepared than the day before!(:

Decided to settle my dinner at A&W! And wait, before you go like – what the, why A&W?!

Lol, well A&W is like an institution here in Okinawa and boy, do they take it seriously!

The must try here is the A&W burger and I have to say that it’s not cheap at all.

I topped up as well for the chilli cheese onion rings and root beer combo set and it was almost S$15 (1230 yen) just for this meal alone!

But it was worth it for the experience 🙂

Plus I took the seats above which came with a nice view overlooking the pseudo Shibuya crossing in front of me hahahaha!

I enjoyed the burger, those yummy curly fries (you can skip the chilli cheese version imo) and the vibes of the place. Very conducive for my reading that night 🙂

More importantly – somehow or anot, I also made a new friend there! She’s a really lovely obasan who took a seat next to me and she was enjoying her ice cream. I was minding my own business reading and eating my burger when she started a conversation with me. This is actually pretty common in Okinawa I notice – the people are really nice.

We could barely communicate but boy, did we try and somehow it worked in a way. I didn’t really get what she said but that was just nice 🙂

Realized we look a LITTLE alike in the selfie above too. Lol.

Back to reading and my meal 🙂 Happy~

I ended off my night with a few things:

Comparing souvenir prices from the various shops along Kokusai Dori street cos on a tight budget and I needed to get the best bang for my buck and also recce on what to buy and what’s available!

Checked out Don Quijote and spotted some really good buys!

My last stop was AEON MaxValu on the way back to my hotel.

Hehe usually at such late hours after 9 or 10, that’s when the supermarkets will always slash prices down between 30-50% off and you can get really cheap food. It’s not like it’s subpar food either and the value can’t be beat luhs.

And yeah, that’s it for my Day 3 in Okinawa~

Quite eggcited for my next day cos I’m going on a tour. Not sure what will happen but eh let’s see how that goes!

P.s omggg the walk from Kokusai Dori back to my hotel can be a scary experience cos of the lack of lights along some back alley streets and such which I had to cut across. It was quite scary till I literally switched on my phone’s flashlight AND RAN for some parts cos I was a little concerned for my own personal safety.

Even though Japan in general is safe but as a solo traveller, you should never discount or take your safety for granted. I’m especially on high alert in secluded or dark lit places and will endeavour to avoid them as much as possible unless I don’t have a choice. But more importantly, I’m safe so it’s all good 👍

Thanks always for reading!

  1. Hi Daphne

Read with great interest your solo Okinawa trip. I will be doing 8D/7N trip in Sep and wonder if should book hotel in Naha city for 7 nights while renting a car? Or good to move out of Naha for few nights before coming back to city?

    1. Hi Josephine! It’s best to move out of Naha and stay out of the city if you plan to move around further up north since you have a car especially since it can be a far drive back to Naha city (depending on your attraction choices). Unfortunately I cant advise further than that because I stayed in the city all the way!(: hope you have a good time in Okinawa!

  2. Hi! You mentioned the possibility of going to DFS store also to get souvenirs before heading back to the airport. Did you find any price difference (mainly for food souvenirs) between DFS and the shops at Kokusai street?
