The Story – 春名包点 Choon Ming Bao Dian

**UPDATED**

Choon Ming Bao Dian no longer sells vegetarian baos at their Toa Payoh outlets from 30 September 2016!

They have 2 outlets in Singapore as below but it seems that only their newly opened outlet at Toa Payoh serves vegetarian dim sum while the other outlet at Ang Mo Kio serves the usual dim sum fare at economical prices.

One of the rare Vegetarian dim sum places you can find in Singapore at affordable prices.

I have personally not tried the dim sum myself but it’s the story behind it that makes me want to head down to the shop to give the lady boss a show of support for all that she has done — and is still doing to date. Plus the queues are pretty much testament to the taste of the dim sum right?(:

春名包点 Choon Ming Bao Dian – THE STORY

This is Madam Tan, the owner behind the Choon Ming Bao Dian dim sum chain in Singapore.

Her dim sum stalls may seem like the usual nondescript dim sum stalls in Singapore but they are so much more!

image

Over the years, she has employed at least 50 less fortunate people in her business, which includes 13 other bun stalls, mostly in Ang Mo Kio and Yishun.

Besides employing those with a history of mental illness, she has also helped single mothers, ex-offenders and foreign workers who had been cheated by their agents. Madam Tan’s charity work extends beyond Singapore. She has also donated $200,000 to build four orphanages, two in Johor Baru, and two in Zhuhai and Guangdong in China.

Her home has also doubled up as a temporary shelter for the homeless, including foreign workers and unwed teenage mothers. While most of the people she helped have eventually found a place of their own, a few continue to live with her.

One of them is Agnes, an 18-month-old daughter of a young unwed mum, who has been living with Madam Tan since she was born. Two other children – Samuel, 11, and Sabrinah, nine – have been sharing her home since 2008. Their father, a drug addict, is in jail.

At the peak, she had 13 outlets between 2011 and 2015. Unfortunately due to higher rental, larger outlets (in order to employ more people) and dwindling profits – only 2 of her outlets remain open as of 2016.

However, Madam Tan says she will keep going no matter the difficulties because the kids give her the courage to hang on to the business.

The lady boss is someone who is truly selfless as she gives so much without wanting anything in return and I admire her big heart.

Do support her and her existing stores if you are in the vicinity!(:
