Former Straits Times reporter charged with underage sex

An ex-reporter of Singapore broadsheet The Straits Times was charged on Monday morning with three counts of sex with an underage girl.

The former Singapore Press Holdings scholar, now 29, whose lawyer reportedly requested that his name not be published in the media, is accused of having sex with the girl, then 15, on three different occasions between late 2011 and mid-2012.

Release of his name, added the lawyer, may lead to the discovery of the victim’s identity, upon which a gag order has been imposed.

According to a Straits Times report, the charges filed Monday against the former reporter included having oral sex with the girl at a house off Upper Paya Lebar Road and in a cubicle of a male public toilet at Fort Canning Park, and having sex in a flat in Serangoon Avenue 1.

The man, who joined the newspaper in 2009, previously attended Dunman High School and Raffles Junior College, and studied history at the National University of Singapore. He is believed to be married.

Yahoo Singapore previously reported that ST fired a reporter from his job on 18 January this year after an internal investigation, which was followed by questioning from the police.
