Kovan murders: Divers search for murder weapon at East Coast

About 30 police officers and divers spent around five hours looking for the weapon used in the recent father-son murder in the waters near the National Sailing Centre at East Coast Parkway on Jul 14. According to The Straits Times, it is not known if the weapon — believed to be a knife — was recovered.

On Wednesday, Mr Tan Boon Sin, 67, was found dead at his home in Hillside Drive. His eldest son, Mr Tan Chee Heong, 42, was found dead about a kilometre away outside Kovan MRT station, after being dragged by a car.

Iskandar Rahmat, the senior staff sergeant with the Singapore Police Force nabbed over the Kovan father-son murder was charged yesterday.

A 14-year veteran of the force and a member of the Bedok Police Division, he was facing financial difficulties and disciplinary proceedings. Checks showed that the married man was declared bankrupt last Thursday, a day after the murders. He has been suspended from duty and faces the death penalty if found guilty.

His relationship to the victims is not yet clear, but he met the older Mr Tan at least once, when the latter reported a theft from a safe deposit box last year.

Yesterday (Jul 15), the Tan family continued to mourn their deaths at the Teochew Funeral Parlour in Ubi. Reporters were shown some artwork done by the three-year-old and 10-year-old sons of Mr Tan Chee Heong in memory of their father and grandfather. The drawings will go into their coffins.

There was a picture of a dragon — a nod to the dragon-related games the younger Mr Tan played with the younger boy. There was also a drawing of a sofa, which the family was expecting to be delivered last week.

“I miss you daddy,” wrote the older boy above the drawing.

When he was told his father and grandfather had died last week, the three-year-old boy posed a heartrending question. “Why did Papa and Gong Gong (grandfather in Mandarin) die at the same time?” he asked his family.

The victims’ funeral will be held today (Jul 16).

Really, really sad for the family. RIP to Tan Boon Sin and Tan Chee Heong. I hope the guilty party will get his just desserts.
