Elderly woman in China dies after runaway trolley on escalator rams into her

Two men at a supermarket in Shanghai lost control of their heavily loaded trolley, causing it to plunge down an escalator and crash into a 60-year-old woman, thus killing her.

According to a report on QQ, the incident took place at Lianhua Supermarket in the Jiading district on Jun 21, at around 10am. The men had loaded a trolley of their own with 15 crates of drinks, which weighed 300 catty (150kg), instead of using the supermarket trolley.

They then pushed the trolley onto the escalator, only to lose control of it. It plunged down the escalator at great speed, crashed into a woman, and sent her flying into a pillar six to seven metres away.

She was sent to a nearby hospital but died of serious injuries. Police are currently investigating the incident.
