A friend of mine shared this article and I was like..WHAT?

Love taking photos of food? Expert says it may be sign of mental illness

If you love taking photographs of food – be it yours or your dining companions’ – an expert says you might have a mental illness.

Eater.com reported that a Canadian mental health expert, Dr Valerie Taylor, said this can also indicate health problems. Dr Taylor was presenting at the Canadian Obesity Summit in Vancouver last week. She told the Huffington Post: “We take pictures of things that are important to us, and for some people, the food itself becomes central and the rest – the venue, the company, et cetera – is background.”

She said that for some people who have the predisposition for weight behaviours, food photography and social media activity can anticipate “unhealthy weight disorders. According to Eater.com, there was another theory by a doctor who said that food porn makes one fat.Alternatively, taking photos of food could also suggest one’s eagerness to show off what one has eaten, or one’s celebration of one’s passion.

If you are guilty of spamming Instagram with photos of your food, here is something positive said about the activity. Food writer Josh Ozersky suggested in a recent column that taking pictures of food might even be a sign of mental strength.

“If anything, shooting food pictures is an act of impulse control, delayed gratification, and long-term planning. It would be a lot easier to just gobble that food up.”

Well, the moment I saw the title of the post, this was my immediate thought:

Love taking photos of food = possible sign of mental illness?! Where did this crap come from?

Bah, bollocks.

If you love taking photographs of food – be it yours or your dining companions’ – an expert says you might have a mental illness.

I think this ONLY applies if a person really has an unnatural obsession with food but for food bloggers and many Singaporeans, it’s more like a ‘ritual’. So if you were to apply this sentence to Singapore context, then at least half of the Singapore population might have a mental illness.

Then it’s time to..

Till later,
