12 year old Singapore student’s YouTube appeal against homophobes goes viral

Just stumbled onto this video being shared on my Facebook newsfeed from Yahoo Newsroom and decided to take a look:

12-year old Singapore student’s YouTube appeal against homophobes goes viral

“Gay”

He is only 12 years old, but Youtube Vlogger Theo Chen’s rant against bullies has struck a major chord online, going viral with over 2,300 views in just a day. The video, titled “Gay”, sees the opinionated student telling off anonymous posters who leave abusive and vulgar messages on his Youtube videos. In the video, Theo shares his feelings over getting bullied both online and in school by school mates who call him a ‘fag’ or ‘gay’ because he dances in his videos.

Just because I make videos doesn’t mean I’m gay,” rants the bespectacled young boy.

“I’m 12 years old, I don’t even know if I’m even gay. Don’t judge people on their sexuality, you should judge people on their personality. Calling someone else gay doesn’t make you more straight.”

Just appreciate me for who I am. If you don’t like me there’s no need torment me.”

The SJI International Elementary School student goes on to share with viewers how even his close friends gossip about him behind his back or make fun of his sister.

“I should just be enjoying high school but I’m not. Could you please stop, go away,  if don’t like watching my videos cos you think I’m gay, then don’t watch them.”

Theo’s videos feature him dancing and lip synching along to popular songs like Nicki Minaj’s Starshipsand the soundtrack to the movie Pitch Perfect. In others, he answers questions posed to him on his ask.fm question-and-answer account. Theo’s rant has been positively received, with subscribers praising him for making a stand by leaving him encouraging comments. Since posting the video, he has gained another 70 subscribers for a total of 230.

Popular local Youtube personalities Munah and Hirzi are two of his biggest supporters. “You are precious and special and you have an army of lovers rooting for you. Anyone picks on you again, you tell us,” posted the duo in a comment that garnered 31 likes. Other comments call him ‘awesome’ and tell him that he ‘rocks’. “You’re amazing dude. I’m rooting for you we all believe in you,” posted Youtube user Alvyn Chai.

All I have to say is that I applaud Theo’s courage to stand up to his haters and voice out his opinions – kudos to him! And hearing what this 12 year boy has to say in his video makes me marvel at his maturity because seriously, when I was 12, I was pretty ignorant (lol).

Well, haters gonna hate..

So stay strong Theo xx
