I heard from my bf this morning that a fire broke out at Newton MRT today on 13 February 2013. So I googled to see if it was true. And it is!
What a way to start off the work week after CNY!
SINGAPORE: A fire has broken out at Newton MRT station on Wednesday morning.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) says officers are now at the scene.
In a tweet by SCDF at 10:19am, it says no injuries have been reported so far.
In a tweet by SMRT at 10:16am, it says there is no northbound train service from Marina Bay to Toa Payoh.
In an update at 10.31am, SMRT says train service from Marina Bay to Toa Payoh is expected to resume in one hour, advises affected passengers to take free bus services available at affected stations, Circle Line or North East Line.
And lol, people just snapping photos even with the fire =.=
If you wondering about the cause of the fire…here it is:
An electric cable in the northbound tunnel 5m from Newton station short-circuited and set off the fire.
The fire disrupted services between Newton and Toa Payoh stations from 9.05 am. Traction power between Marina Bay and Toa Payoh stations was turned off from 10.05am as a safety precaution to allow Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers and SMRT staff to access the tracks. As a result, services between the two stations were stopped too. The train services resumed at 11.20am.
SMRT said in a statement it sent out in the evening that Newton station staff members managed to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher initially. But the fire reignited causing causing smoke from the tunnel to travel to the station. SCDF officers, who were informed of the fire at 9.04 am, put out the fire with fire extinguishers and some foam. No one was injured.
