Just happened on this story when I was on STOMP and The Straits Times just now. Oh God.

TWO brothers were killed in a gruesome traffic accident in Tampines earlier on Monday, 28 January 2013.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it had received a call at around 5:43pm, and that the boys died after being hit by a truck at the junction of Tampines Ave 9 and Tampines St 45. The 13-year-old male cyclist and the 7-year-old male pillion were pronounced dead at scene by paramedics.

The younger boy was found in the uniform of Tampines North Primary School.

Police said that the 56-year-old Singaporean male driver of the truck was arrested at the scene.

The two brothers, 13 and seven, who were on a bicycle, were killed after being hit by a cement truck outside Dunman Secondary School, at the junction of Tampines Ave 9 and Tampines Street 45 on Monday evening. The Singapore Civil Defence Force found them dead at the scene. According to The New Paper, the older victim is understood to be Nigel Yap who studied at Tampines North Primary school before moving to Springfield Secondary School. The younger boy is Donovan Yap from Tampines North Primary School.

Schoolmates of Nigel Yap, 13, from Springfield Secondary, describe him as a cheerful boy who loved to laugh a lot

Eyewitnesses reportedly said that the truck driver — a 56-year-old Singaporean man who has since been arrested — was apparently unaware that he had hit the boys and continued driving until other drivers honked at him to stop.

The police will do their best to find out who was at fault and bring this case to a closure for all especially for the parents. If it was the driver, may he be punished duly by law.

But on a honest note, regardless of whose fault was it, be it the driver or the cyclist, it doesn’t change the fact that two young lives were lost today on 28th January 2013.

And to the other cyclists on the road, please, please cycle safely. The roads nowadays are no longer safe.

This is the message that the father of the two boys, Francis Yip has for all drivers, especially lorry/truck drivers. Please keep a lookout, don’t make mistakes, don’t overlook blind spots. One mistake can cause the loss of lives.

I uploaded it on Youtube as I am unable to embed Facebook videos into WordPress.

And seriously, for goodness sake, to respect the 2 boys privacy, kindly do not post up any of the GRAPHIC accident photos or post insensitive remarks about it.

Like sometimes I wonder, what is WRONG with these people?
Is this even remotely FUNNY? This isn’t a cause for trolling either.

And today, 30th January 2013, I finally saw the photos of the 2 boys as revealed on My Paper and The Straits Times and my eyes teared up during work.

My heart went out to the parents who lost both their sons.

My deepest condolences to the family.
