Punggol East Early By-Elections on 26th January 2013

In a shock move on 12th December, Speaker of the House Michael Palmer resigned as Member of Parliament for Punggol East after revealing he had an extramarital affair with Madam Laura Ong, an ex-employee of the People’s Association working in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.

Michael Palmer’s resignation on the 12th of December came as a BIG shock to most people in Singapore. Almost everyone was talking about his extramarital affair with Laura Ong – which is the reason for his resignation.

As a result, there has to be a new By-Elections to select a New Member of Parliament right? This by-election was predicted to be held in March or April after the annual Budget debate. But in a surprising turn of events, it is now scheduled to be held earlier.

Why?

Well, according to Prime Minister, PM Lee Hsien Loong, in a press statement yesterday, he said that a by-election will give residents their own Member of Parliament (MP), before the nation focuses its attention back on national issues such as the Budget debate.

He also said:

I hope Punggol East residents will vote for the candidate who can best represent them in parliament, solve their problems and improve their lives

So let’s take a look at the shortlisted potential candidates who we think might be run shall we?

As taken from The Straits Times Facebook page

Wednesday will be nomination Day.

So if more than one candidate stands nominated for the elections at the close of nominations, our favorite returning officer – Yam Ah Mee will declare 26 January 2013 to be polling day.

Unfortunately, Polling Day for the by election is NOT a public holiday. Well, at least we get to see Yam Ah Mee again!(:

Yay for Yam Ah Mee!(:

Till later
